Owen Scott

Owen Scott (born July 6, 1848 in Effingham County , Illinois , †  December 21, 1928 in Decatur , Illinois) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1893 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Owen Scott attended public schools in his home country and a private school in Kinmundy . He then graduated from the State Normal School in Normal . He then worked as a teacher. Between 1873 and 1881 Scott was a school councilor in Effingham County. After studying law at the same time and being admitted to the bar in 1873, he began to practice this profession in Effingham . From 1881 he was also active in the newspaper industry. At that time he published the Effingham Democrat newspaper. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1882 he became mayor of Effingham; in 1883 and 1884 he was the city's legal advisor. In 1884 he moved to Bloomington , where he continued to work in the newspaper business and edited a daily and weekly newspaper. Between 1885 and 1889 he was deputy head of the federal tax authority in his home country. In 1888 he chaired the regional Democratic Party convention for Illinois.

In the congressional elections of 1890 Scott was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 14th  constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Jonathan H. Rowell on March 4, 1891 . Since he was not confirmed in 1892, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1893 . In 1899 Scott moved to Decatur, where he was manager of the Decatur Herald newspaper until 1904 . After that he worked in the insurance industry until 1921. Since 1921 he was secretary of the Masonic Lodge of Illinois ( Secretary of the Masonic Grand Lodge of Illinois ). He held this post in Decatur until his death on December 21, 1928.
