Charles McGavin
Charles McGavin (born January 10, 1874 in Riverton , Sangamon County , Illinois , † December 17, 1940 in Chicago , Illinois) was an American politician . From 1905 to 1909 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Charles McGavin attended Springfield Public Schools and Mount Olive High School . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1897, he began to work in Springfield in this profession. In 1899, he relocated his residence and law firm to Chicago . From 1903 to 1904 he was deputy city lawyer there. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party .
In the congressional election of 1904 , McGavin was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eighth constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded the late William F. Mahoney on March 4, 1905 . After a re-election, he was able to complete a second legislative term in Congress until March 3, 1909 . In 1908 he renounced another candidacy.
After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Charles McGavin returned to working as a lawyer in Chicago. From 1912 to 1915 he lived in Los Angeles ( California ), where he also practiced as a lawyer; after that he returned to Chicago. In June 1920 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Chicago, where Warren G. Harding was nominated as a presidential candidate. Charles McGavin died in Chicago on December 17, 1940.
