Robert McClory (born January 31, 1908 in Riverside , Cook County , Illinois , †  July 24, 1988 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1963 and 1983 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Robert McClory attended public schools in his home country. In 1925 and 1926 he graduated from L'Institut Sillig in Vevey , Switzerland . He then attended Dartmouth College in Hanover ( New Hampshire ) until 1928 . After studying law at the Chicago Kent College of Law and being admitted to the bar in 1932, he began to work in this profession. Between 1933 and 1937, McClory was a member of the United States Marine Corps reserves . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a Republican . In 1950 he was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives. From 1952 to 1962 he was a member of the State Senate .

In the 1962 congressional elections , McClory was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the twelfth constituency of Illinois, where he succeeded Edward Rowan Finnegan on January 3, 1963 . After nine re-elections, he was able to complete ten legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1983 . Since 1973 he represented there as the successor of Phil Crane the 13th district of his state. His time in Congress included the Vietnam War , the civil rights movement and, in 1974, the Watergate affair . Between 1963 and 1982 he was an American delegate to various inter-parliamentary conferences. In 1982 he renounced another candidacy.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Robert McClory practiced as a lawyer in Washington, where he died on July 24, 1988.
