William Hartzell

William Hartzell (born February 20, 1837 in Canton , Ohio , †  August 14, 1903 in Chester , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1879 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1840, William Hartzell moved to Danville , Illinois with his parents . The family lived in Mexico between 1844 and 1853 . He then returned to Randolph County , Illinois. By 1859 he graduated from McKendree College in Lebanon . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1864, he began to work in Chester in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In the congressional elections of 1874 Hartzell was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 18th  constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Isaac Clements on March 4, 1875 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1879 . In 1878 he renounced another candidacy.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, William Hartzell initially practiced as a lawyer again. From 1897 to 1903 he was a judge in the Third Judicial District of Illinois. He died in Chester on August 14, 1903.
