John Shimkus

John Shimkus Mondy [ ʃɪmkəs ] (* 21st February 1958 in Collinsville , Illinois ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . He is a member of the US House of Representatives for the state of Illinois.

Life

Shimkus attended Collinsville High School , and in 1980 he graduated from West Point Military Academy with a bachelor's degree . After five years in the US Army , he became a reservist in 1986 and retired from military service in 2008 with the rank of lieutenant colonel .

At the private Christ College (now Concordia University ) in Irvine ( California ) he received his teaching qualification in 1990 and then taught at the Metro East Lutheran High School in Edwardsville (Illinois). At Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, he received a Master of Business Administration degree in 1997 .

After holding various regional political offices - including serving as Madison County's treasurer from 1990 to 1996 - he was elected to the Republican House of Representatives of the 105th Congress in January 1997 and has since been re-elected to all following. Since 2013 he has represented the 15th congressional constituency of Illinois there ; previously it was the 20th and 19th districts. Shimkus is a member of the Energy and Trade Committee and four sub-committees, chairing the Environment and Economic Committee. He is also a member of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly .

Since he was re-elected in 2016, he is also a member of the 115th Congress of the United States , which met on January 3, 2017 . His new legislative term runs until January 3, 2019 with the option of a further candidacy in 2018.

Shimkus is married with three children and is a member of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod .
