Lewis E. Payson

Lewis Edwin Payson (born September 17, 1840 in Providence , Rhode Island , †  October 4, 1909 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1881 and 1891 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1852 Lewis Payson came to Illinois with his parents, where he attended public schools and then Lombard University in Galesburg . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1862, he began to work in Ottawa in this profession. In 1865 he moved his residence and law firm to Pontiac . Between 1869 and 1873 he was a district judge. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party .

In the congressional elections of 1880 Payson was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the eighth constituency of Illinois, where he succeeded Greenbury L. Fort on March 4, 1881 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1891 . From 1883 he represented the ninth district of his state there as the successor to John H. Lewis . From 1889 he was chairman of the committee for the administration of the state land.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Lewis Payson practiced again as a lawyer. He died on October 4, 1909 in the federal capital Washington.
