James LD Morrison

James Lowry Donaldson Morrison (born April 12, 1816 in Kaskaskia , Illinois , †  August 14, 1888 in St. Louis , Missouri ) was an American politician . In 1856 and 1857 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Nothing is known about the childhood and youth of James Morrison. Between 1832 and 1839 he served in the Navy. After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began working in this profession in Belleville . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Whig Party . In 1844 he became a member of the Illinois House of Representatives . During the Mexican-American War he assembled a company from Illinois and served as a lieutenant colonel in the American armed forces in 1846 and 1847. He was awarded a sword of honor by the state parliament for his military achievements during the Battle of Buena Vista . In 1848 Morrison was elected to the Illinois Senate. Four years later he was unsuccessful as a Whigs candidate for election to lieutenant governor of his state. He later became a member of the Democratic Party .

In 1856, Morrison was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in a by-election in the eighth constituency of Illinois , where he took up his new mandate on November 4, 1856. Since he was not nominated for the regular elections of 1856, he could only end the current legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1857 . This time was shaped by the events leading up to the civil war .

In 1860, James Morrison ran unsuccessfully for his party's nomination for governor of Illinois. After that, he no longer appeared politically. He died on August 14, 1888 in St. Louis.
