Thomas J. Selby

Thomas Jefferson Selby (born December 4, 1840 in Delaware County , Ohio , †  March 10, 1917 in Hardin , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1901 and 1903 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas Selby attended the public schools in his home country. From 1864 to 1866 he was Sheriff in Jersey County , Illinois. He then published the Jersey County Democrat newspaper between 1866 and 1870 . From 1869 to 1877 he was also employed as a county clerk in the county administration. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1869, he began to work in this profession from 1875. At the same time, Selby embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He has been elected mayor of Jerseyville twice . From 1888 to 1900 he was a district attorney in Calhoun County .

In the congressional election of 1900 Selby was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 16th  constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded William E. Williams on March 4, 1901 . Until March 3, 1903, he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress . After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Selby practiced again as a lawyer. At times he worked again as a public prosecutor. He died on March 10, 1917 in Hardin, where he was also buried.
