Gerald C. "Jerry" Weller (born July 7, 1957 in Streator , Illinois ) is an American politician . Between 1995 and 2009 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jerry Weller attended Dwight High School until 1975 and then Joliet Junior College in Romeoville until 1976 . This was followed by studies at the University of Illinois until 1979 . In 1980 and 1981, Weller was in the service of Congressman Tom Corcoran . He then worked for the Illinois Department of Agriculture. From 1981 to 1985 he also worked for the US Department of Agriculture . Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party . From 1988 to 1994 he was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives . He was the founder and chairman of the Grundy County Young Republicans .

In the 1994 congressional election , Weller was elected to the Eleventh constituency of Illinois in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Democrat George E. Sangmeister on January 3, 1995 . After six re-elections, he was able to complete seven legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 2009 . During his time as a congressman, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan fell . In the meantime he was a member of the Committee on Ways and Means and two of its sub-committees. In 2008 he decided not to run again.

In 2006 and 2007, Weller hit the headlines over controversial land purchases and related financial inconsistencies in Nicaragua . The Chicago Tribune reported that Weller had misrepresented the size of the land.

Private

Weller is married to Zury Ríos Sosa, daughter of the former Guatemalan dictator Efraín Ríos Montt .
