George W. Fithian

George Washington Fithian (born July 4, 1854 in Willow Hill , Jasper County , Illinois , †  January 21, 1921 in Memphis , Tennessee ) was an American politician . Between 1889 and 1895 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Fithian attended public schools in his home country. He then completed an apprenticeship in printing in Mount Carmel . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1875, he began to work in Newton in this profession. Between 1876 and 1884 he was a prosecutor in Jasper County. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In the congressional election of 1888 Fithian was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 16th  constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Silas Z. Landes on March 4, 1889 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1895 . From 1893 he was chairman of the merchant marine and fisheries committee. In 1894 he was not re-elected.

Between 1895 and 1897, George Fithian was Illinois State Railroad and warehouse commissioner . He also practiced as a lawyer again. He was also active in agriculture and especially in the field of cattle breeding. Near Falcon in the state of Mississippi , he had a large cotton plantation. He died in Memphis on January 21, 1921 and was buried in Newton.
