Charles A. Hill

Charles Augustus Hill (born August 23, 1833 in Truxton , Cortland County , New York , † May 29, 1902 in Joliet , Illinois ) was an American Republican Party politician who was a brief representative of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

biography

After attending schools in Griffins Mills, Hamburg and Will County , he attended Bell's Commercial College in Chicago in 1856 before studying law . After he was first admitted to the bar in Indianapolis , he returned to Will County in 1860, where he also took up a practice as a lawyer.

In August 1862 he volunteered during the Civil War for military service in the F Company of the 8th regiment of volunteer cavalry of Illinois ( Illinois Volunteer Cavalry ). He was later promoted to first lieutenant and then in 1865 to captain of the C Company of the 1st Regiment of the US Colored Troops . After the war ended, he returned to Will County and opened a law firm in Joliet. In between, he was 1868-1872 Attorney ( Prosecuting Attorney ) for Will County and Grundy County .

In 1889 he was elected as a Republican candidate to the US House of Representatives and represented the 8th congressional electoral district of Illinois from March 4, 1889 to March 3, 1891 , but was defeated in the elections to the 52nd US Congress to the Democrat Lewis Steward .

After a subsequent renewed activity as a lawyer in Joliet, he was last from 1897 to 1900 Assistant to the Attorney General of Illinois ( Assistant Attorney General ).
