John Edward Porter

John Edward Porter (born June 1, 1935 in Evanston , Illinois ) is a former American politician . Between 1980 and 2001 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Porter attended the public schools of his home country and then Evanston Township High School until 1953 . In 1953 and 1954 he studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge . This was followed by a study at Northwestern University in Evanston until 1957 . After studying law at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and being admitted to the bar in 1961, he began working in this profession. From 1958 to 1964 Porter was a member of the United States Army Reserve . From 1961 to 1963 he worked for the Federal Ministry of Justice. Then he worked again as a private lawyer. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . From 1973 to 1979 he was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives . In 1978 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress .

After the resignation of Democratic MP J. Mikva , Porter was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , at the due by-election for the tenth seat of Illinois , where he took up his new mandate on January 22, 1980. After ten re-elections, he could remain in Congress until January 3, 2001. In 2000 he decided not to run again for Congress. Today John Porter works as a partner in a large law firm.
