William Oliver "Bill" Lipinski (born December 22, 1937 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American politician . Between 1983 and 2005 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Bill Lipinski attended St. Patrick High School in Chicago until 1956 and studied at Loras College in Dubuque ( Iowa ) in 1956 and 1957 . Between 1961 and 1967 he was a member of the US Army Reserve . He also embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1975 and 1982 he was a city councilor in Chicago. In 1976 and 1984 he took part as a delegate at the respective Democratic National Conventions . In 1977 he was also a delegate at the regional Democratic Party convention in Illinois.

In the 1982 congressional election , Lipinski was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded John G. Fary on January 3, 1983 . After ten re-elections, he was able to complete eleven legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 2005 . Since 1993 he has represented the third district of his state there as the successor to Marty Russo . During his time as a congressman, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan fell . He was a member of the transport committee . Within his party, Bill Lipinski was considered a rather conservative MP. This was particularly true of foreign policy.

In 2004, Lipinski gave up at short notice to run for another congressional candidacy after he had already won the democratic primary . In his place, his son Dan was nominated by the party leadership and then elected to the House of Representatives, to which he has belonged ever since.
