Greenbury L. Fort

Greenbury Lafayette Fort (born October 17, 1825 in French Grant , Scioto County , Ohio , †  January 13, 1883 in Lacon , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1873 and 1881 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1834, Greenbury Fort came with his parents to Marshall County , Illinois, where he attended public schools and Rock River Seminary . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1847, he began to work in this profession in Lacon. In 1850 he became sheriff there . Two years later he held the office of Clerk of Marshall County . In 1857 he became a district judge. During the Civil War , Fort served as an officer in the Union Army . He rose to lieutenant colonel by 1865. After the war he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1866 he was elected to the Illinois Senate.

In the congressional election of 1872 Fort in the eighth constituency of Illinois was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded James Carroll Robinson on March 4, 1873 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1881 . In 1880 he decided not to run again for Congress.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Fort retired. He died on January 13, 1883 in Lacon, where he was also buried.
