George E. Shipley

George E. Shipley (1975)

George Edward Shipley (born April 21, 1927 in Olney , Illinois , †  June 28, 2003 there ) was an American politician . Between 1959 and 1979 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Shipley attended East Richland High School and then Olney High School until 1950 . His school years were interrupted by his military service in the United States Marine Corps , of which he was a member from 1944 to 1947. Between 1950 and 1954 he was employed by the Richland County Police Department as Chief Deputy Sheriff ; from 1954 to 1958 he was sheriff there . Then he worked as a private entrepreneur. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In the 1958 congressional election , Shipley was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 23rd  constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Charles W. Vursell on January 3, 1959 . After nine re-elections, he was able to complete ten legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1979 . Since 1973 he represented there as the successor to William L. Springer the 22nd district of his state. His time in Congress included the Vietnam War , the civil rights movement and, in 1974, the Watergate affair .

In 1978 George Shipley declined to run again. After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, he no longer appeared politically. He died in Olney on June 28, 2003.
