Lewis steward

Lewis Steward (born November 21, 1824 in Hollisterville , Wayne County , Pennsylvania , †  August 27, 1896 in Plano , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1893 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Lewis Steward attended public schools in his home country. In 1838 he came to Kendall County , Illinois with his parents . There he later became a successful farmer and landowner who also worked in other industries. This included banking and the manufacture of agricultural implements. In the early 1850s he founded the town of Plano, which was on a railway line. This enabled him to better transport his agricultural equipment. These devices included combine harvesters, mowers and grain binders. In 1860 Steward also studied law, but without ever working as a lawyer. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . In 1876 he ran for the office of governor of Illinois, but was defeated by Republican Shelby Moore Cullom with 49:51 percent of the vote.

In the congressional election of 1890 Steward was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eighth constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Charles A. Hill on March 4, 1891 . Since he was not confirmed in 1892, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1893 . After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Lewis Steward resumed his previous activities. He died in Plano on August 27, 1896.
