The county's first name was Orange County, named after a county in New York State from which most of the settlers were descended. The county was renamed a short time later after Amos Kendall , the post office secretary under President Andrew Jackson .

The first settlements were on the banks of the Fox River and Waubonsie Creek in 1835 , followed by Newark , Yorkville and Little Rock (1836) and Lisbon and Millington (1838). The petition to form a separate county from 1840 contained 109 signatures from settlers living there.
