course
Wisconsin
The Fox River has its source not far from Menomonee Falls in Waukesha County . In the further course he flows through Brookfield , Waukesha and Big Bend in Waukesha County. He then enters Racine County , where he passes Waterford , Rochester and Burlington . In the further course, the Fox River reaches Kenosha County . There it forms the western edge of Silver Lake before it leaves the state of Wisconsin for Illinois. The total section of the river through Wisconsin is 110 km.
A barrage in Waterford forms a 4.9 km² shipping lane. This makes the river navigable from Big Bend to the Waterford Dam. The river flows through a series of small lakes, the largest of which is Tichigan Lake .
After the river was dammed again at a small dam in Rochester, the Fox River flows unregulated through Burlington, where the White River empties. This section is very popular with canoeists.
Illinois
The length of the river section from the state border to the mouth is 185 km. After the river enters Illinois territory, it expands into a lake landscape known as the Chain O'Lakes . The largest city in the area is Fox Lake in Lake County . The river flows through the cities of Johnsburg , McHenry , Holiday Hills , Island Lake , Cary , Fox River Grove and Algonquin in McHenry County on its further course in a southerly direction ; Carpentersville , West Dundee , East Dundee , Elgin , South Elgin , St. Charles , Geneva , North Aurora , Aurora, and Montgomery in Kane County ; Oswego , Yorkville , Plano and Millington in Kane Counties ; and Sheridan and Ottawa in LaSalle Counties .
Six kilometers downriver from South Elgin are the Five Islands in the river.
