St. Charles is a city in the north of the US state Illinois in Kane County and DuPage County . The city has 32,134 inhabitants on an area of 36.6 km², of which 0.4 km² is water. The city on the Fox River has many parks. In addition to the Fox River, the Ferson Creek and Norton Creek also flow through the city . There are also a number of smaller lakes in the city area.
history
The city was formerly called Charleston. In 1839 the name was changed to St. Charles at the instigation of the attorney SS Jones .
Cityscape
The city presents itself as a typical American small town, but also shows a bit of Mediterranean flair. Because of the many shops it is a tourist attraction and is also very friendly. Particularly striking is the famous Wild Rose house , which served as a shelter for the Underground Railroad . There escaped black slaves found refuge and were able to escape through a tunnel. The big house is also known for the claim that Abraham Lincoln spent one night there. For visitors to this house it is advisable to take a special look at the north face; there are bullet holes of the notorious Al Capone , who is said to have killed someone there.
