history
Moses Stacy, a former British-American War soldier ( 1812-1815 ), moved to what was later called Glen Ellyn in 1835. His inn "Stacy's Tavern", built in 1846, was a horse-changing station for stagecoaches. For a long time the city was called 'Stacy's Corners'.
In 1889 Thomas E. Hill and Philo Stacy dammed a river near the city. The newly created water was named Glen Ellyn, after its origin, a narrow valley (English "glen"), and the Welsh form of the name of Hill's wife, Ellen.
In 1891 the lake was advertised as a recreational area in nearby Chicago. This also made the name of the reservoir the name of the city.
Former names of Glen Ellyn town were: Babcock's Grove, DuPage Center, Stacy's Corners, Newton's Station, Danby, Prospect Park.
