After earning a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Missouri , Deaver worked as a newspaper writer. Then he enrolled at Fordham Law School to become a correspondent for the New York Times or the Wall Street Journal . After graduating , he worked as a lawyer for a large Wall Street firm for several years. During this time he began to write books and short stories in the thriller genre .

In 1990 he gave up the profession of lawyer and devoted himself exclusively to writing. Jeffery Deaver is divorced and has no children. He lives with his German Shepherd Gunner, alternating between North Carolina and California .

In July 2003, Jeffery Deaver tried his hand at acting in the soap opera As the World Turns . In the same year he published a collection of sixteen short stories under the title Twisted , which is sold in German-speaking countries under the title Todesreigen . At the end of 2006, a second volume with short stories was published under the title More Twisted ( Ger . Gezinkt ).

No German publisher has yet been found for the novel Garden of Beasts , which was set shortly before the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin . The title of the book refers to the Berlin zoo , in which a key scene takes place.

He is known for providing his books with numerous surprises and ambiguities, which is why he is considered one of the best authors of psychologically intelligent thrillers.

In The Cold Moon a new recurring character was introduced with Kathryn Dance. Kathryn Dance is an interrogation specialist who evaluates respondents' body language in particular.
