Random House Audio is a German audio book and radio play publisher based in Munich . It was founded in Cologne in 1999 and has been part of the Random House publishing group since 2004 . In 2014 the company moved to the Bavarian capital. Alongside Hörverlag , which is also part of the Random House publishing group, Random House Audio is one of the most important representatives of the industry in German-speaking countries . Successful productions were, for example, the Brigitte series Strong Voices and Der kleine Drache Kokosnuss by cbj audio. In addition to entertainment literature , classics and non-fiction books , Random House Audio also publishes sophisticated contemporary literature and poetry .

history

In 1999 Bertelsmann founded an audio book publisher under the name "BMG Wort" based in Cologne. The reason for this was the development of the market in the 1990s. The first managing director of the company was the music producer and Cologne city councilor Karl-Heinz Pütz. After the takeover of Random House by Bertelsmann , the publishing group Random House was created in 2001. The restructuring also affected BMG Wort, the company changed its name to Random House Audio. In 2004, Random House Audio expanded its program to include the titles of Ullstein Hörbuchverlag , which joined Bertelsmann and Random House with the acquisition of the Ullstein Heyne List publishing group. Random House Audio has been fully integrated into the Random House publishing group. Bertelsmann is still the sole shareholder of Random House Audio GmbH , based in Cologne.

In the late 2000s, the audio book market stagnated. Joachim Güntner spoke in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung of a "displacement battle on a dwindling market". The Random House publishing group announced the takeover of Hörverlag in October 2010 , which increased the combined market share of Random House Audio and Hörverlag to 27 percent. The main reasons for the merger were better access to licenses and the challenges of digital markets. After the death of Karl-Heinz Pütz, Sabine Buss took over the management of Random House Audio in 2013. She was followed in 2014 by Claudia Baumhöver , who also headed Hörverlag. In the same year Random House Audio moved from Cologne to Munich, where the other publishers of the publishing group such as Goldmann , Heyne and, for example, Hörverlag were already located. Since then, Random House Audio and Hörverlag have been run jointly, but continue to operate independently in terms of organization and programming. Claudia Baumhöver left the house at the end of 2015, today Robert Wildgruber leads the audio book publishers of the Random House publishing group.

program

Random House Audio's program includes works by Elke Heidenreich , John Irving , Franz Kafka , Stephen King , Charlotte Link , Kate Morton and others, read by actors and speakers such as Frank Arnold , Dietmar Bär , Christoph Maria Herbst , Hannelore Hoger , Simon Jäger and David Nathan . Every year, around 150 new titles appear physically and as downloads at Random House Audio. From the beginning, many audio books were produced parallel to the printed book, which is often also reflected in the design of the cover.

The audio book publisher's first titles included excerpts from the biography of Muhammad Ali read by Ben Becker . In 2002 Dieter Bohlen's autobiography "Nothing but Truth" brought Random House Audio a notable commercial success. The audio book had a circulation of over 200,000 copies. In the early years, Random House Audio tried to address new customers with comedy titles in addition to fiction . For example, a radio play by “ Winnetou ” came into the program as early as 2001 , which WDR had recorded with Mike Krüger , Jürgen von der Lippe , Bastian Pastewka , Hella von Sinnen and others. Random House Audio also took over the distribution of works by the comedy label WortArt , for example by Christian Macharski . Today Carolin Kebekus , Michael Mittermeier , Dieter Nuhr and others are also in the program.

In addition to classics such as the radio play archive by William Shakespeare , Random House Audio also publishes sophisticated contemporary literature . This includes works by Arno Schmidt , which Jan Philipp Reemtsma set to music in 2000. In 2002 Elke Heidenreich and Christian Schuller realized Leonard Bernstein's “On the Infinite Diversity of Music”. Even Christoph Ransmayr and Walter Kempowski took at his own lyrics for the audio book publishing. International authors such as John Grisham and Stieg Larsson are also part of the program. Poetry also played a role at Random House Audio: For example, Laith Al-Deen , Iris Berben and others recited works by Rainer Maria Rilke as early as 2002 . The audio book became a bestseller. The implementation of Else Lasker-Schüler's poems by pop musicians at Random House Audio 2005 also attracted greater attention . In 2010, Marcel Reich-Ranicki presented his “Hörkanon”, a selection of German literature. Random House Audio also publishes audio books on movies , which are often produced in cooperation with a film distributor. An example of this is the audio book for Andy Weir'sThe Martian ”.

More recent titles from Random House Audio are, for example, “Altes Land” by Dörte Hansen , “Alles keine Zufall” by Elke Heidenreich and Jürgen von der Lippes “I sing ballads while stretching”. In addition to adapting books, Random House Audio repeatedly publishes its own productions and original editions , including, for example, the “CSI fairy tales” (2012) and “Christmas with the Thalbach family” (2014).

Downloads

Since 2004 Random House Audio has offered almost all productions as downloads . They were also involved in building up Audible in Germany. From 2006 to 2012 Random House Audio operated their own download portal for child-friendly audio books together with Super RTL under the domain toni.de.

Editions

In 2005 the series “Strong Voices” started in cooperation with the women's magazine Brigitte . It was exceptionally successful and reached over 1.5 million sales. “Strong Voices” received several gold records . The journalist Barbara Schaefer judged in a Spiegel Special that Random House Audio had conquered female customers with “strong identifying figures” as speakers and thus “turned the market for audio books inside out”. From 2007, another audio book edition was published under the name "GEO Hörwelten" in cooperation with GEO magazine at Random House Audio. Other series were launched with Neon and TV Movie , for example .

cbj audio

Since 2003 at the latest, audio books for children and young people have also had a permanent place in the Random House Audio program. In 2004, “Nie wieder”, an audio book about the Nazi era , received the German Audio Book Prize in the “Best Children's / Youth Audio Book ” category. In 2007, audiobooks for children were produced in cooperation with "GEOlino". In 2009 the children's area “audionauten” was renamed “cbj audio”, which is now a label of Random House Audio. In addition to the cooperation with the cbj children's books publisher , cbj audio also works with other publishers. The most successful series from cbj audio is “Der kleine Drache Kokosnuss” by Ingo Siegner with over a million copies sold by 2014. Another bestseller was, for example, Christopher Paolini's Eragon tetralogy. For example, Andreas Fröhlich , Oliver Rohrbeck and Philipp Schepmann worked as speakers for cbj audio.

Day Night

In 2010 Random House Audio founded a book publisher under the name "Tag & Nacht". Publishing director Karl-Heinz Pütz wanted to reach readers primarily with popular entertainment literature; Elton and Martin Rütter were among the first authors . Advertising the publisher for the debut - Roman Nathalie Bergdoll caused a controversy with the Rowohlt Verlag . Tag & Nacht is an independent publisher under the umbrella of the Random House publishing group.
