Reception and controversy
Jacob Grimm Prize 2014
In May 2014, Nuhr received the Jacob Grimm Prize for German Language . The jury justified the award with the words:
“Dieter Nuhr does intelligent cabaret. His pieces are eloquent, the punch lines accurate. But he not only pays careful attention to the linguistic quality of what he says: he also brings language criticism closer to his audience and encourages them to think about the effect of language "
Islam criticism 2014
According to Reinhard Mohr, Nuhr is one of the few cabaret artists in Germany who satirically deal with aspects of Islam in their programs and books . In October 2014, the Muslim Erhat Toka filed a criminal complaint against Nuhr. The Osnabrück public prosecutor closed the case in November 2014.
The Islamic scholar Mohammad Gharaibeh accuses Nuhr of disclosing grievances such as Islamism and fundamentalism , but mostly amusing himself with Muslims and Islam abroad and thus projecting common prejudices onto this religion and its followers and promoting corresponding stereotypes. Statements by Nuhr suggested that he saw Muslims in Germany as foreigners who did not belong to European culture.
Thunberg review 2019
In an edition of his program Nuhr on September 30, 2019, Nuhr commented on Greta Thunberg's speech at the UN climate summit the week before and stated "I will no longer heat the children's room because my daughter goes to the Friday demos" and "If our children think we can drive this world with a little sun and wind, then we parents should put a hamster wheel with a dynamo in their children's room". These statements caused a lot of criticism and a shit storm on Twitter .
When asked about this, he said in an interview that he was actually in favor of Fridays for Future and climate protection , but the demands of the movement were unattainable and resulted in the dissolution of the world trade order. This would then lead not to millions, but to billions of deaths and a third world war. Spiegel Online stated to the criticism, "The loser of the day is composure" and quoted Herbert Feuerstein : "Everyone has the right to be ripped off." In a column in the taz , the editorial staff of EMMA was criticized for this because this was because of his Statements against Thunberg "as a rebel against ' Political Correctness '" had praised. “Nuhr was only doing his job” commented Sebastian Briellmann in the Basler Zeitung .
DFG grant 2020
For its anniversary campaign in 2020, the German Research Foundation (DFG) published, among other things, an audio contribution by Nuhr. In it he stated, among other things: "Knowledge does not mean that you are 100 percent sure, but that you have enough facts to have a well-founded opinion." It was therefore correct that scientists changed their opinion: "That is normal. Science is precisely that opinion changes when the facts change. And those who keep calling, follow science! ' obviously didn't understand that. ”After a shitstorm on social media in which Nuhr was accused of scientifically questionable relativizations of climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic , the DFG deleted the article.
The dispute between the DFG and Nuhr was settled shortly afterwards through the mediation of the science journalist Ranga Yogeshwar and the article was put back online unchanged. The DFG published the declaration in which it apologized to Nuhr and said with reference to Nuhr: “Mr. Nuhr is a person who stands in the middle of our society and is committed to science and rational discourse. Even if his pointedness as a satirist may be irritating for some, an institution like the DFG is committed to freedom of thought on the basis of the Enlightenment. ”The philosopher Philipp Hübl defended Nuhr's contribution to Deutschlandfunk Kultur on the grounds that satire was“ a kind of Peer Review for Our Morals ”.
photography
Nuhr also takes photos and exhibits his photographic art in galleries and museums; first in 2008 in Hamburg , 2010 and again in 2015 in the Ratingen Museum , the Siegburg City Museum and the Küper Gallery in Beijing. In 2017 his work was shown in the Villa Stahmer in Georgsmarienhütte . The artistic work is just as important to him as the work on the stage, he said.
social commitment
Dieter Nuhr is one of the first signatories of the appeal against prostitution by the magazine Emma from 2013. He has been supporting the SOS Children's Villages since 2006 . He visited projects in Sudan , Lebanon and Ethiopia and acts as an SOS ambassador. He started his own online fundraising campaign and donated pictures for the “SOS trick”. His profits from the show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? he made available to the Sudanese children's village in Khartoum . From spring 2017, he campaigned for the release of the German-Turkish journalist Deniz Yücel , who had been imprisoned by the Turkish government under President Erdogan without a trial.
