A TV show that was initially broadcast by Sat.1 from 2003 to 2011 is brilliant . The concept of the show goes back to Hugo Egon Balder and Marc Conrad , the name to Cornelia Scheel , the former partner of Hella von Sinnen .

A new edition has been broadcast on Sat.1 since March 2017. Since July 2018, an offshoot has been running Mondays to Fridays at 7 p.m. under the title Genial besides - The Quiz .

concept

The principle of the broadcast is that a guessing group consisting of five comedians should answer questions sent in as entertainingly as possible. The comedians have no text and have to improvise, which is why the show can be attributed to improvisational comedy.

The questions asked come from the field of general education and are usually very curious. Questions about sexual curiosities from the animal kingdom or terms that evoke sexual associations are particularly popular . The idea corresponds roughly to the parlor game Lexicon game .

If the guessing group does not manage to answer the question correctly within an arbitrary time set by Balder, he resolves the question and the sender receives 500 euros. From time to time the answer to a question is so complex that Hugo Egon Balder first reads the answer out and then lets the team assess for itself whether the question was answered correctly. If questions are partially or only solved with massive help from Balder, it is sometimes agreed to pay the sender the amount of 500 euros. The studio guests can submit a written question immediately before the recording, from which one is selected for the current program. If the question is not answered, the guest will receive the 500 euro prize money in cash and live on the show.

While in the first season some of the questions were created by the editors, these later only consisted of questions sent in by viewers. The three-person editorial team received up to 40,000 entries per week.

Moderation and regular cast

The show is hosted by Hugo Egon Balder , who also asks the questions. Until 2010, the advice team consisted of the two permanent members Hella von Sinnen and Bernhard Hoëcker and three guests who changed with each program. In the episodes broadcast from July 15, 2011, Hella von Sinnen is no longer part of the advice team - due to time constraints, according to Sat.1. In 2016, Hella von Sinnen said that her departure was due to different ideas between the production team and her about changes to the show. In the new edition from 2017, Hugo Egon Balder can be seen again as a moderator and Hella von Sinnen as a permanent member of the advice team. Wigald Boning also appears for the first time as a permanent member of the advice team.

Ingeniously by the way (2003-2011)

Production and broadcast

The program was broadcast for the first time on January 11, 2003 and extended from 45 to 60 minutes just a few months after it started broadcasting because of its great success. The broadcast slot was on Saturday evening after the main program previously broadcast with slightly changing broadcast times around 10:15 p.m.

From August 2004, the new episodes were broadcast on Fridays at 8:15 p.m. at a fixed time and repeated on Saturdays. Between October 2004 and March 2006 there were two new editions a week that aired on Fridays and Saturdays. In March 2006, the broadcast on Saturday was canceled due to lower ratings and in order not to “dead broadcast” the format. From November 11, 2006, Genial was no longer shown on Fridays, but only on the original slot on Saturday evening. The repetition ran on the following Sunday morning.

From August 23, 2008 the program was produced in 16: 9 .

From the end of November 2009, Sat.1 only broadcast repeats. Since then, production has achieved the worst values in its history. No result of the repetitions at different starting times achieved the channel average of around nine percent market share (the advertising-relevant target group). This led to speculation that production would be discontinued. From February 2010, feature films were shown instead of the broadcast on Saturday evening.

From July 16, 2010, six new episodes ran on Fridays at 10:15 p.m. on Sat.1. The last recordings were made at the end of 2010. In 2011, twelve new episodes were broadcast between July and October (Fridays, 10:15 p.m.) with the changed concept, followed by repetitions. Sat.1 had never officially canceled Genial , but the contract with moderator Balder was not extended.

The recordings of the episodes of Genial besides, which were first broadcast between 2003 and 2011, took place in a studio of the Magic Media Company (MMC) in Kalscheuren . The directors were mostly Berny Abt or Sabine Quiter, the production company was Hurricane Fernsehproduktion GmbH. Recordings were usually made twice a month on alternating working days, with two episodes filmed per day.

Until 2013, old episodes were repeated on pay TV on Sat.1 Comedy and on free TV on Comedy Central and Sat.1 Gold . In addition, the Austrian broadcaster Puls 4 also broadcast old episodes from 2008 to 2009.

Anniversary & special episodes

The show initially ran with high ratings . The anniversary editions of the program were broadcast on October 30, 2004 (100th program), January 14, 2006 (200th program), December 9, 2006 (250th program), November 24, 2007 (300th program) and on 29. July 2011 (400th broadcast).

The August 9, 2008 episode was called Ladies Night , as only female guests were invited. Along with Hella von Sinnen, Anke Engelke , Barbara Schöneberger and Cindy from Marzahn were there . Bernhard Hoëcker put on a wig for the show.

On January 1, 2004, a special issue on television was broadcast in which only questions from this area were asked. On June 7, 2008, a special issue on football was broadcast, in which only questions from this area were asked. Matze Knop imitated Franz Beckenbauer.

Guests (selection)

Running gags

  • Hella von Sinnen regularly suggested insects , rabbits and butterflies as possible answers to questions relating to disambiguation .
  • After the dissolution, Hella von Sinnen protested that she had said this at the very beginning. She was supported by her colleagues.
  • Balder sometimes asked Hoëcker whether the suggestion made (by another comedian) was correct, which he then always denied: - Balder: “Hoëcker, what do you think?” - Hoëcker: “Wrong.” - Balder: “Correct! "
  • Balder often asked Hoëcker to demonstrate or help demonstrate the answer. Even if an unusual or impossible answer was given, he would then suggest: "Hoëcker, go ahead!"
  • Hoëcker said he had several suggested solutions and started with the first, but was interrupted by Balder in the middle of a sentence and asked to continue with another.
    • As a modification of this, he started (according to his own statement) directly with the second suggestion, since the first would have been wrong anyway.
  • There were many jokes about Hoëcker's small size, mostly on Balder's part. Hoëcker himself usually took this calmly and even went along with it, for example asking the question: "Where do you get something like that?" In the case of many of the phenomena described that lead to changes in size of any kind?
  • Because of his age, Hella often referred to Balder as an old man , fossil , dead man walking , Methuselah or Mississippi . The latter came from the name Old Man River for the Mississippi and from the song of the same name . The team also often asked him for personal experience reports on historical experiences.
  • Christoph Maria Herbst often suggested a long-forgotten apple variety from the Eifel as a solution .
  • Bastian Pastewka sometimes suggested “cream schnitzel ” as a solution . In addition, in response to Balder's question about the name of the previously proposed object, phenomenon or living being, he often gave the answer “Horst”. When asked about a date or historical event, he often answered " Wednesday ".
  • The fact that Bastian Pastewka was never able to answer a question correctly until the broadcast of March 28, 2009 ( when asked: "Why are passengers at Cologne Airport greeted with the sentence:" Welcome to Bonn, Cologne-Bonn "? ) was taken up by this very joke again and again.
  • The team often suggested that part of a term sought in the question was derived from a proper name (for example, when asked "What is a catch stand?", Hella suggested that it was invented by a Mr. Fang). When Balders asked what first name this person had, Hoëcker usually answered “Eduard”.
  • Another running gag was the mention of the footstool that Bernhard Hoëcker had to prevent his legs from hanging in the air, in order to prevent a thrombosis . Balder then sometimes asked him to show them to the audience.
  • At the beginning of a question asked, Balder often greeted the audience at home on the divan. Sometimes he also had the advice team add the seating. The word suggested by the advice team was then never the one chosen by Balder (for example Balder: “I greet the spectators at home on the…” Team: “Diwan” Balder: “Kitchen chair”).
  • The cool temperature in the studio was repeatedly mentioned by the advice team. According to her own statement, Hella von Sinnen needed this to think. Jokingly, the cool studio temperature was also often justified with Hella von Sinn's menopause, as she supposedly had "flying heat".
  • Hella von Sinnen often replied to a joke told by Balder that she had heard it very often.
  • Often times the wrong answers to previous questions are taken again for new questions.
  • Balder often grimaces at the panel, which is usually not captured by the camera. Hella always reacts excitedly and often calls it "The Face 2007 (/ 08/09 ...)

Trivia

  • In the talk show "Studio D" of the online media magazine DWDL.de , Balder announced that he had asked Jürgen von der Lippe to be the presenter for the show several times. Balder just wanted to act as a producer. However, von der Lippe declined and Balder became the moderator.
  • In the program broadcast on March 31, 2007, the advice team succeeded for the first time in correctly answering all questions on a program. Anke Engelke , Dieter Nuhr and Ralf Schmitz were guests . This succeeded a second time on May 23, 2009, guests were Guido Cantz , Oliver Kalkofe and again Dieter Nuhr. In each of these episodes 6 questions were answered correctly. This had already happened before (including on August 20, 2004), but three further questions were not answered here. On the other hand, there have been programs in which only one question or no question at all was answered correctly.
  • At the 250th broadcast on December 9, 2006, the following interim balance could be drawn: Up to this point in time, a total of 65 comedians were members of the advice team. 1,891 questions were asked, 763 of which were answered correctly. A total of € 563,650 could be paid out as prizes to the senders of the questions. The amount of money is not a multiple of € 500, as the celebrities decided a few times to pay out at least a part after solving the question only with Balder's help or only partially.
  • The British program QI (Quite Interesting) has a similar format; However, points are not only awarded for correct but also for creative answers.
  • A board game, a tear-off calendar, a book and a box with three DVDs (twelve episodes) are included as merchandising items for the show.
  • For the meanwhile last episodes, which were broadcast from July 2011, the music and design of the studio were revised. In addition, the concept was expanded to include films and telephone calls.
  • Wigald Boning was the most frequent guest with 125 appearances, followed by Guido Cantz with 97 and Dieter Nuhr with 65 shows.

New edition: Ingeniously beside it (since 2017)

Production and broadcast

After the transfer of rights from Hurricane television production to Constantin Entertainment, RTLplus , a special interest broadcaster of the RTL Group focusing on new editions of game show formats, first showed interest in a new edition. After a legal examination it emerged that ProSiebenSat.1 Media still has broadcasting rights in Switzerland and Austria. As a result, the Sat.1 channel was also considering a new edition. In December 2016, Sat.1 confirmed that new episodes of the show will be broadcast on Sat.1 again in spring 2017. In January 2017, Sat.1 confirmed that Hugo Egon Balder was hired to moderate the new edition. Hella von Sinnen is also part of the advice team again. Bernhard Hoëcker is replaced in the new edition by Wigald Boning . The six new episodes have been broadcast since March 10, 2017.

On April 6, 2017, Sat.1 confirmed the continuation of the new edition with a second season, which was broadcast from September 8. Ten new episodes were produced from the beginning of December and could be seen on Sat.1 from January 26, 2018.

In February 2018 it was announced that Sat.1 is producing an eleven-part fourth season. Production began in April of that year. Trivia

  • When the program was reissued in 2017, the situation arose four times that the term searched for had already been asked in a previous episode. “What is a mating helper?” Was asked in the newly produced episode with the first broadcast date March 10, 2017, but was asked as a question from the audience for the first time in the episode on November 8, 2008. Likewise, in the episode of October 28, 2005 and in the new episode of March 10, 2017, you had to guess what a " sacrificial sausage " is. Where the “ 24-hour ant ” got its name from, Balder wanted to know both in the broadcast on April 7, 2017 and in the episode on December 16, 2005. In addition, the question of what "ironing sex" was was asked in the programs on July 15, 2011 and March 23, 2018.
