Life

Cornelia Scheel (1972)

Cornelia Scheel is the daughter of the doctor and later founder of the German Cancer Aid Mildred Scheel nee. Wirtz and the film director Robert Adolf Stemmle . She spent the first two years of her life in a children's home. After that, Mildred raised her daughter alone. After her mother's marriage to the future Federal President Walter Scheel in 1969, she was adopted by him and thus given his family name. She attended the Nicolaus-Cusanus-Gymnasium in Bonn . In the mid-1970s, she worked for the benefit of the German Cancer Aid, founded by her mother in 1974, as a child spokeswoman for the radio play Michael and the Tredizianer . Scheel graduated from high school and studied medicine in Innsbruck for five semesters .

After completing her studies, she worked for three years for the German Cancer Aid, of which her mother was president from 1979 until her death in 1985. Here Cornelia Scheel took care of the concerns of the children's cancer aid with a focus on public relations. After she and Hella von Sinnen appeared at the Federal Press Ball in Bonn in January 1991 and thus made their relationship known, the management of Deutsche Krebshilfe released her from public relations work, as the organization feared the loss of donations. Scheel then ended her employment with the German Cancer Aid, but remained connected to her mother's life's work. Since 2009 Cornelia Scheel has been involved again in the work of the German Cancer Aid in the fight against the widespread disease cancer. In September 2015, together with its president Fritz Pleitgen and her sister , she asked the audience at the Carmen Nebel donation gala for the benefit of the German Cancer Aid to donate. In 2016, Scheel publicly affirmed her solidarity with her mother's life's work by participating with the top management of the German Cancer Aid in the ZDF charity gala Welcome to Carmen Nebel .

In 1998, Scheel and Hella von Sinnen founded the Komikzentrum GmbH company, which, among other things, produces texts by Sinnens. The couple was separated for a few months in 2002, but had been living together again in Cologne since August of the same year . In November 2015, Scheel announced that the relationship had ceased to exist in 2014. At the end of October 2015, her book Mildred Scheel - Memories of my mother was published , in which she wrote down her memories of her mother 30 years after Mildred Scheel's death.

In December 2017, the German Cancer Aid named Cornelia Scheel as the new chairwoman of its friends' association, the Mildred-Scheel-Kreis.

Social policy activities

Together with von Sinnen, Scheel took part in the registry office campaign of the then gay association in Germany (SVD; today the Lesbian and Gay Association in Germany , LSVD). On 26 May 1992, she ordered the Cologne squad . Both announced that if they were not recognized, they would go to the Federal Constitutional Court . As a result, both the SVD and the initially skeptical gay lawyers , who actually considered the time not yet ripe for same-sex marriage and therefore would have preferred to wait to get a larger number to file a lawsuit, launched a Germany-wide action Action called the registry office . On August 19, 1992, Scheel and von Sinnen and 250 other homosexual couples applied for a wedding in more than 50 German cities at the same time. This was rejected according to the legal situation, the complaints before the constitutional court were not accepted. Out of this commitment, the song Ja, ich will , produced together with the German band Rosenstolz , arose , in whose video von Sinnen and Scheel contributed.
