what's new? is an Austrian comedy - quiz show that since 2004 the ORF runs and Oliver Baier is moderated.

overview

The show is comparable to the programs Absolutely ingenious and ingenious beside it - The Comedy Arena , which can be seen on ATV and Sat.1 . The concept of What's New? is based on the basic idea of the French RTL program Les grosses têtes , created in 1977 by Jean Farran and Roger Krechervon and moderated by Philippe Bouvard .

broadcast

The advice team consists of five prominent cabaret artists who try to answer curious questions or explain unusual terms or objects, whereby the actual, correct answer to the question is viewed as secondary and the main focus is on the most entertaining answers possible. If a question is asked in the broadcast, regardless of whether the question is actually answered, the sender receives a 300 euro book voucher.

Since September 13, 2013, the studio and logo have had a new layout and a slightly modified title melody.

Rubrics

Usually three questions are asked per broadcast via video feed: One comes from the ORF newsroom in the form of the fictional archivist Mr. Bruckmann , portrayed by ORF employee and cabaret artist Claus Bruckmann . Another question is asked by a viewer and a third by a celebrity.

In each broadcast, a “thing of the week” is passed through the guessing round, mostly new inventions or antique objects, the respective use of which is not immediately apparent and whose purpose is to be guessed. A similar category has been the “Pictogram of the Week”, which has appeared regularly since 2013, but not in every program, whereby the meaning of a pictorial reference should be guessed.

Anniversary editions

On May 25, 2007, the ORF broadcast the 100th program. The 200th show aired on March 5, 2010. What was special about this show was that the same advice team also appeared in the 100th show. On February 8, 2013, the 300th program was broadcast; Guests were Ulrike Beimpold , Eva Maria Marold , Michael Niavarani , Viktor Gernot and Gerold Rudle . The 400th edition aired on February 19, 2016; Guests were Lukas Resetarits , Ulrike Beimpold, Günther Lainer , Gery Seidl and Viktor Gernot. The 500th broadcast took place on May 3, 2019 (guests: Michael Niavarani, Viktor Gernot, Thomas Stipsits and Eva Maria Marold and Ulrike Beimpold).

particularities

Originally conceived as a family-friendly entertainment program in the later main evening program, it tended to change into a late evening show due to the often used swear words and the humorous allusions below the belt. At times the show started after 11pm on Fridays. As a result, some recordings could not - as planned - be broadcast in the morning program of the following week and were replaced by older reruns.

Is a recurrent theme of rate team and moderator of the fact that it is a recording with live character is. Already used practically as a running gag , slip of the tongue, connection errors and inconclusive transitions are not cut out, but broadcast in full. It happens that Oliver Baier tries the same introduction several times and is prevented from completing it by the advice team by grimaces or cheeky reports.

The topic of the show is determined by social, political or sporting events, but it can also be based on an anniversary or a mostly bizarre world day. In addition, small gifts, so-called goodies, are distributed for particularly good advice or extraordinarily funny reports; the moderator tosses them to those concerned.

The advice team depends on the topic of the show. It has already happened that Michael Niavarani and the four members of the cabaret group “ Die Hectiker ” took part in the show without a female person. In addition to Michael Niavarani, four women - Monica Weinzettl, Ulrike Beimpold, Eva Marold and Susanne Pöchacker - were invited to the show on the topic of “Valentine's Day 2008”. Viktor Gernot was allowed to ask the celebrity question because, for once, he couldn't be in the studio.

In the broadcast on October 15, 2010, the advice team around Ulrike Beimpold, Robert Palfrader , Gerald Votava , Florian Scheuba and Rudolf Roubinek managed to answer all questions correctly for the first time.

The programs of September 29, 2017 and October 13, 2017 also have a special feature: For the first time in almost 14 years of broadcast history, Oliver Baier had to pass due to illness, so Gerold Rudle stepped in as host.

Advice team

The advice team consists of Austrian cabaret artists, with Viktor Gernot or Michael Niavarani traditionally mostly part of the team. Most of the rounds consist of four men and one woman. However, it can also happen that German colleagues who are currently on tour with their programs in Austria are invited. So far the advice team included:
