The Austrian Cabaret Prize , also known as "Karl" until 2006, has been awarded annually in Vienna since 1999 . It was brought into being by the then head of the cabaret Vindobona , Wolfgang Gratzl. The award winners are selected by an independent expert jury consisting of cultural journalists . Up until 2010, cabaret artists were awarded in two categories (main prize and program / sponsorship prize). Since 2011, the award has been organized by the “Austrian Cabaret Prize” association with the chairwoman and organizer Julia Sobieszek. In the same year the new special price category was introduced.

The prices

2011: Christof Spörk, Ernst Stankovski (on behalf of Louise Martini) and Sigi Zimmigart
2010: Michael Niavarani, Nadja Maleh and Viktor Gernot

The main prize honors the demanding, innovative and continuous work of a cabaret artist, documented on the basis of his current program, which he presented last season.

The program or sponsorship award honors an outstanding production or a young artist worthy of support, but also a satirical literary contribution from the last season.

The special prize has been awarded since 2011 to people who have made a name for themselves in satire in German-speaking countries, regardless of their discipline and regardless of whether they are artists or sponsors. In 2011 the actress and chansonnière Louise Martini was honored with the special award, in 2012 the cartoonist Manfred Deix . In addition to the special prize, they also received a painting or a comic by the painter Reinhard Trinkler .

Until 2009, the prizes were donated by Wien Energie , after the city of Vienna withdrew them in 2010 , and in 2011 BAWAG PSK and HDI Versicherung joined as partners. Until 2010, the main prize was endowed with 7,000 euros and the program or sponsorship award with 3,000 euros; from 2011 the endowment is 5,001 euros (main prize) and 4,999 euros (program / sponsorship prize). The special price is undoped. In addition, the winners receive a statue. Since 2011, in line with the revised corporate identity of the award, it has been designed in the form of a mirror, which is intended to symbolize that cabaret artists and satirists hold the mirror up to society.

The award ceremony took place in Vindobona until 2006, in 2007 for the first time in Radiokulturhaus , in 2010 in Vindobona and in 2011 and 2012 in the Jazz & Music Club Porgy & Bess . The 2013 prizes were presented on November 27th at the MuTh . After the cabaret prize was awarded for the first time in Vienna's Urania on November 11, 2014, the 2015 award ceremony also took place here.

In 2016, the award ceremony, which took place on November 8, was broadcast on ORF for the first time . An audience award was also given via online voting, which went to the comedy quiz show “ What's new? “Went.
