Die Tagespresse is an Austrian website operated by Fritz Jergitsch that publishes satirical articles in the style of newspaper articles on Austrian topics, the articles being fictitious.
History, content and reception
The website was founded in May 2013 by Fritz Jergitsch (* 1991 in Vienna) based on the US website The Onion and the German-language website Der Postillon . Before that, he graduated from the Meidlinger Gymnasium Rosasgasse and completed a bachelor's degree at the University College in Utrecht, which he completed in 2013 with a specialization in economics and politics and a bachelor thesis on alternatives to the patent system. He also did internships at the Federation of Industry and a PR agency. An EU proposal for a seed regulation led him to write satirical texts and thus criticize the EU's obsession with regulation. He finally published the texts on a blog and later on his own website. The first article appeared on May 29, 2013 with the headline Bored EU Commissioner wants to regulate cell division . The sarcastic reports and fictional statements by politicians were quickly spread via social media .
In June 2013, the medium that describes itself as Austria's most serious online newspaper caused a stir with a report about the alleged arrival of NSA investigator Edward Snowden at Vienna Airport. Many people believed the news to be genuine, so the Austrian Foreign Ministry was forced to deny it. After an article about the kangaroo Keuschi , which the Catholic Church sends to schools to teach sexual abstinence, the Archdiocese of Vienna received angry calls and Cardinal Christoph Schönborn had to deny the message on his side.
The website has appeared in the Austrian web analysis since summer 2014 , at the beginning the page was in 25th place of all Austrian websites in terms of visitors. According to Austrian web analysis, the website recorded 1.3 million visits in July 2015. The website is financed through advertising, with editorial advertising being used in addition to classic banner advertising. For example, a satirical article was written for a beer brand.
From 2013 to 2019 a selection of articles in the daily press was published in book form each year .
In 2015 the website employed a team of four authors, including the screenwriter and gag writer for the ORF satirical program Willkommen Österreich , Jürgen Marschal. Among other things, he wrote the article Letter, which appeared in November 2014, was lying around in the post office for years: Confirmation of admission from the art university has only now been sent to Adolf Hitler. With 1.2 million hits, this was one of the most successful articles. In addition to the articles for his own satire website, Jergitsch also writes for other comedy projects, such as for the ORF program Eckel mit Kante with Klaus Eckel or for the satirical section of Puls 4 . In 2016, the daily press also employed one employee each in Salzburg and Tyrol for regional editions.
In 2017 the British daily The Guardian temporarily quoted an article in the daily press. This wrote in May 2014 that Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz wanted to assert his right to be forgotten and that he wanted to remove a video from the results of the Google search engine about the 2010 state and municipal council elections in Vienna , in which Kurz had a Geil-o-Mobil drive through Vienna . According to the daily press and the Guardian, the application to Google was signed with "xxx hugs & kisses Outside minister Sebi". In 2017, Die Tagespresse employed nine freelancers in addition to the team of three authors. One of the most successful articles up to that point was Aus Rache: Air forces dropped porno magazines and beer on IS , which was shared and liked almost 150,000 times on Facebook .
In August 2017 they could be seen at the Frequency Music Festival on the “LOL Stage” with a satire program.
After the former Green Party leader, Eva Glawischnig , moved to the Novomatic gaming group in March 2018, Die Tagespresse put the relevant agency report from the Austria Press Agency (APA) online.
A payment barrier was introduced in June 2018 . Five articles per month can still be accessed free of charge, and access is free for those receiving minimum income and anyone under the age of 21. In November 2018, it had around 2,900 subscribers, including around 1,800 paying subscribers.
The daily press show
On September 20, 2016, Die Tagespresse Show , presented by Paul Kraker, celebrated its premiere at the Rabenhof Theater in Vienna , with Peter Klien as the external correspondent. In 2019, the second stage program, black and blue, followed uncensored .
Daily press current
From September 19, 2017, the program Tagespresse aktuell could be seen following the late-night show Willkommen Österreich on ORF , showing twelve episodes of 20 to 25 minutes each. Cabaret artist Joachim Brandl acted as moderator in the role of anchorman Joachim Fuchs , Magda Kropiunig presented the celebrity interviews section . Antonia Stabinger presented the heading “Heimat, Heimat, Heimat”, author and FM4 presenter Lukas Tagwerker presented domestic politics, poetry slammer and cabaret artist David Scheid acted as youth reporter “Dave” for “Generation Why” and as wind and weather man Berni Wagner . The first episode was followed by an average of 297,000 viewers, the market share was 20 percent. The first ten programs had an average of 246,000 viewers per episode. At the end of January 2018, Jergitsch announced that there would be no second season for the time being, the team wanted to concentrate on the online presence again.
