The Porgy & Bess (actually Jazz- and Musicclub Porgy & Bess ) is a jazz club at Riemergasse 11 in Vienna's 1st district, Inner City .

history

Hans Salomon in Porgy & Bess (2003)

Mathias Rüegg founded Porgy & Bess in the autumn of 1993 together with Renald Deppe, Gabriele Mazic and Christoph Huber , which was initially housed in the rooms of the former Cabaret Fledermaus in Spiegelgasse . He then took over the management together with Renald Deppe and Christoph Huber; the latter has been the club's artistic director to date.

In 2000 the club moved to Riemergasse after a long period of renovation, after the location had already been awarded to it in May 1998. Between 1998 and 2000 Porgy & Bess made an interim guest appearance at the RadioKulturhaus . The official opening of the new premises took place on December 28, 2000. The structural adaptation of the former Rondell erotic cinema was supported with federal funds amounting to around 15 million schillings.

function

The program at Porgy & Bess appeals to a very large audience, around 70,000 guests a year; accordingly, jazz is “understood in a very pluralistic way” and the program “also penetrates into marginal areas such as electronic music , contemporary music and world music ”. In addition to numerous international performers, especially from the US, Austrian musicians will also find a place to perform here. The club also provides the stage for events such as the presentation of the Austrian World Music Awards .

According to the musicologist Christian Scheib, the Porgy & Bess is "at the same time essential for the further development of the musical (jazz) reality of a city" and needs and consumes "as urban space simply everyday music". It creates the necessary differentiation from other clubs "through artistic preferences, acoustic quality, capacity and actual occupancy." The different areas of the jazz club - area in front of the stage with tables, gallery on the upper floor, a side area with a bar on the Bar - different intensities of concentration on the concert. For jazz ethics , the Porgy & Bess is even a "traditional club."

In the basement there is a recording studio that is wired to the stage and enables professional live recordings.

financing

In the founding phase, Porgy & Bess received annual public funding from the City of Vienna of around ATS 1.8 million.

The company currently has an annual budget of around € 1.7 million (as of 2018), which is largely financed from sponsorship money and income from admissions. Public subsidies make up around 15%, with the federal government contributing around € 150,000 and the City of Vienna around € 110,000.
