Hans Salomon

Hans Salomon (born September 10, 1933 in Vienna ) is an Austrian jazz musician , band manager and composer who played for a long time in the swing jazz band Fatty George (1927–1982) and with Gulda and later (around 1980) founded his own quintet .
The versatile instrumentalist ( alto saxophone , clarinet , soprano and tenor saxophone ) is considered a "living legend of Austria's jazz scene". In 1954 he co-founded the Austrian All Stars with Joe Zawinul and, in addition to many years of work in the ORF Big Band, was also head of the Vienna Big Band Machine , the Blue Note Big Band and Lady P & Friends .
Musical career
Salomon began his jazz activities in 1945 with Fatty George and the Johannes Fehring Big Band , and then played with Vera Auer . In addition to cooperation with Friedrich Gulda and the sextet of Erich Kleinschuster he long played in the Big Band of the ORF . He wrote the theme melody for Gerhard Bronner's television program The Big Bell . Gerhard Bronner wrote the text Wia a Glock'n in 1970 , which, sung by Marianne Mendt , is considered to be the initial spark for Austropop and the Austrian “dialect wave”.
Salomon was also increasingly active internationally - among others with Louis Armstrong , Arturo "Chico" O'Farrill and Gerry Mulligan , Sarah Vaughan and Sidney Bechet . Other collaborations were with Ray Charles , Lou Rawls , Barry Manilow , Ella Fitzgerald , Marlena Shaw , Lionel Hampton , Mel Lewis , Ron Carter , Julian Cannonball Adderley , JJ Johnson , Johnny Griffin , Hans Koller , Slide Hampton , Art Farmer . He also appeared on TV shows and tours with Peter Alexander , Udo Jürgens and Shirley Bassey . Cooperation with Richard Oesterreicher and Robert Opratko . In 1958 he became a member of the Newport International Band.
From 1965 to 2000 Salomon was a member of the orchestra of the United Theaters of Vienna. At the same time he played in the band of Lady "P" and in many appearances with changing groups. For a while he was head of the “Vienna Big Band Machine” and the “Blue Note Big Band” with Frank Main .
Salomon arranged albums for Art Farmer , Stan Getz , "Toots" Thielemans and Toni Stricker . He also took over the direction of “Romantic Symphony” with the Austrian Radio Orchestra. He also released two albums of his own : Speak Low - Romantic Jazz Vol.1 (2000) and Midnight Lady - Romantic Jazz Vol.2 (2001).
From 2001 to 2011 he supported the hip-hop band of his son Roman ( DeWieners ). In October 2005, Hans Salomon was the mentor and co-designer of the jazz festival at the opening of the jazz museum in Vienna- Donaustadt .
Salomon lives in Vienna-Floridsdorf.
