Mario Gonzi (* 5. May 1966 in Mödling ) is an Austrian drummer of modern jazz .

Life

Gonzi has been playing the drums since he was five. In 1979, at the age of thirteen, he began studying at the Vienna Conservatory with Erich Bachträgl . In 1980 and 1982 he took part in Peter Herbolzheimer's Big Band seminar in Deutschlandsberg with Ronnie Stephenson and Ed Soph . Since 1982 he has performed with Eddie Lockjaw Davis . Tours, concerts and recordings with musicians such as Sal Nistico , Jim Pepper , Allan Praskin , Claudio Roditi , Karl Ratzer , Etta Cameron , Clark Terry , Vincent Herring and Take 6 follow . In 1989 Mario Gonzi worked for Paquito D'Rivera in New York City for a long time . In 1992 he played in the big band of Joe Haider and Bert Joris . He toured the United States with the Art Farmer quintet , of which he was a member from 1985 to 1999. He is also a member of Roman Schwaller's quartet and Adrian Mears ' New Orleans Hard Bop . From 1998 to 2008 he was a member of the Vienna Art Orchestra . He also accompanies Marianne Mendt and Zipflo Weinrich . In 2012 he was part of the Olaf Polziehn Trio with Jesse Davis on tour in Germany. He also worked with Addison Frei .

In 2001 he was awarded the Hans Koller Prize as " Sideman of the Year".
