Hans Koller Prize

The Hans-Koller-Preis was an Austrian jazz prize that was founded in 1996 and awarded from 1997 to 2009. The award ceremony took place annually in December.

The prize was named after the Austrian jazz saxophonist Hans Koller , who died in 2003, and was organized and presented by the Austrian Music Office (AMO) association, which was founded by Mathias Rüegg in 1996. The prize was sponsored by the Federal Ministry for Education, Art and Culture , the City of Vienna , Bank Austria and Austro Mechana (society for the exercise of mechanical and musical copyrights).

The Hans Koller Prize was awarded in the five categories “Musician of the Year”, “Newcomer of the Year”, “Sideman of the Year”, “Album of the Year” and “European Jazz Prize”. Thanks to the European Jazz Prize, the Hans Koller Prize was also radiant abroad. It was last endowed with € 17,500. Until 2007 the European Jazz Prize was endowed with € 14,500, "Musician of the Year" with € 7,300, "Newcomer of the Year" with € 5,500, Sideman and Album with € 3,600. Since 1996, an "Austrian State Prize" has been awarded every four years as a category of the Hans Koller Prize as a state prize for improvised music to an Austrian jazz musician for his life's work, endowed with € 11,000 and sponsored by the Federal Ministry for Education, Art and Culture has been. The first prize winner was Hans Koller himself.

After 2009, Bank Austria withdrew as a sponsor . After the City of Vienna and the Republic of Austria did not want to fill the budget gap created by the bank's withdrawal, Mathias Rüegg, the long-time head of the Austrian Music Office , stopped the award-organizing committee's activities in April 2010. For a while there was talk of an effort to realign the Hans Koller Prize, but that did not happen. The promotion of outstanding young musicians was transferred to the " Outstanding Artist Awards ", which the Federal Ministry for Education, Art and Culture awards in different categories; there is no longer a European price category.
