Gina Schwarz

Gina Schwarz (born November 2, 1968 in Hollabrunn ) is an Austrian jazz musician ( double bass , electric bass , also accordion , composition ).

Live and act

Schwarz initially received lessons in jazz bass at the Vienna Conservatory and from Peter Herbert . She then studied bass at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna , where she received a Magister Artium , and from 2002 at the Berklee College of Music in Boston with John Lockwood . During a further study visit to New York, she deepened her instrumental knowledge with Cecil McBee , Ron McClure , Buster Williams and Dennis Irwin .

Since 1992 she has played in bands such as the Yta Moreno Quartet, Wiener Salsa , the Groovehunters, Marianne Mendt , Harri Stojka , Willi Resetarits , Richard Oesterreicher , Ziplflo Weinrich and the Robert Bachner Bigband. She is on recordings with Global Glue ( Eardance , 2005), the Robert Bachner Big Band ( Moments of Noise 2006, Spotlight on Ella Fitzgerald 2007, Live in Vienna 2009 ), George Garzone ( In the Zone 2007), Muriel Grossmann (Natural Time 2016, Momentum 2017, Golden Rule 2018, Reverence 2019), Heinrich von Kalnein (Möbius Strip 2020) or the double bass sextet Bass Instinct ( Illusionista 2008 , Butterfly 2010, Homebass 2016 ). In 2001 she was involved in the incidental music for the play "Damen der Gesellschaft" at the Vienna Burgtheater .

She has been leading her quintet SchwarzMarkt since 2005 , with whom she released her debut album under her own name the following year and mainly performs her own compositions. With Bastian Stein , Bernhard Wiesinger , Robert Bachner, Heimo Trixner, Philipp Jagschitz and Harry Tanschek as well as the bandoneon player Ingrid Eder she founded her band Jazzista (2012) . In the Airbass group, led by Richard Oesterreicher , she plays with Herbert Otahal, Clemens Salesny , Woody Schabata , Harry Tanschek and Primus Sitter , among others . She runs the Playground4 project with Esther Bächlin , Stephanie Wagner and Ingrid Oberkanins ; she also plays in a trio with Gérard Guse and Ramón López . In 2017 and 2018 she brought musicians such as Marilyn Mazur , Ingrid Jensen , Sylvie Courvoisier , Karin Hammar , Camila Meza , Angelika Niescier and Julia Hülsmann to Vienna's Porgy & Bess as part of her Pannonica project .

Schwarz has been teaching at the Institute for Popular Music at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna since 2011 .

Prizes and awards

Schwarz received the Berklee Best Award; She is also the winner of the MusicMaker composition competition organized by the municipality of Mistelbach in 2002. In 2007 she was awarded the Hans Koller Prize as "Side (wo) man of the year".
