Woody Shabata

Fritz "Woody" Schabata (* 28. August 1955 in Vienna ) is an Austrian jazz - Malletspieler .

Live and act

Schabata studied at the Musikhochschule and the Conservatory of the City of Vienna and for a year at Oberlin College in Oberlin in the United States. In 1977 he was a founding member of the Vienna Art Orchestra (VAO) with Mathias Rüegg and Wolfgang Puschnig , of which he was a member until 1987. During this time he undertook several world tours with the VAO and recorded several albums with the ensemble.

Since 1982 he has been the first percussionist at the Vereinigte Bühnen Wien. He also gave concerts with Joe Zawinul and Dave Brubeck and worked in his own groups and projects with a. a. Roland Batik ( Bridges ), Ernst Jandl , Peter Henisch , Helmut Lohner , the Ensemble Wien and Rudi Josel , Wolfgang Puschnig, Robert Weiß , Hans Zinkl and the Art of Brass Ensemble . He led the group Hot Malletts with Martin Breinschmid and a quintet with Richard Oesterreicher . In 1986 his solo album May-Rimba was released by PolyGram .
