Wolfgang Puschnig (born May 21, 1956 in Klagenfurt ) is an Austrian jazz musician ( alto saxophone , flutes , bass clarinet , composition ).

Live and act

After studying saxophone and flute at the Vienna Conservatory , Puschnig was a founding member of the Vienna Art Orchestra with Mathias Rüegg in the mid-1970s , in which he was active until 1989. He was also involved in the Ernst Jandl projects with Lauren Newton . At the beginning of the 1980s he also played with Hans Koller , with the Air Mail quartet and with saxofour . In the mid-1980s, Carla Bley brought him into her groups. He worked in various groups with Wolfgang Mitterer , Uli Scherer , his long-term partner Linda Sharrock and with Jamaaladeen Tacuma ; in addition , the collaboration with Reinhard Flatischler , Herbert Joos , Christof Lauer and Michel Godard has increased in recent years . In the “Alpine Aspects” project, he has been playing with jazz musicians and the Amstetten musicians since 1991 (most recently at the JazzFest Berlin 2006 and the Musikfest Waidhofen / Thaya 2007). In addition, he has performed repeatedly with the Korean percussion ensemble SamulNori .

Puschnig is a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna and director of the Institute for Popular Music there.

Awards

In 1998 Puschnig was awarded the Hans Koller Prize . In 2004 he was the first musician to receive an honorary doctorate (Dr. hc) from the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt , and in 2016 he received the Great Decoration of Honor from the State of Carinthia .
