Linda Sharrock (* 2. April 1947 in Philadelphia as Linda Chambers ) is an American jazz singer .

Live and act

Sharrock first sang in gospel - and in school choirs and received classical singing lessons. At the age of 17, she moved to New York City to study art , but then joined the groups of Pharoah Sanders , Milford Graves , Sirone , Joe Bonner and Sonny Sharrock , her future husband, as a jazz singer . She performed with Herbie Mann and with her husband led groups such as The Band of Outlaws or Band of Savages . With her husband she recorded the records "Black Woman" (1969), "Monkey-Pockie Boo" (1970) and "Paradise" (1975); Although she was featured on the cover of the first two albums, her name only appeared on an equal footing with her husband on the third album. After her divorce in 1978, she retired from the music business for some time.

After a long journey through Asia, she found a new basis for a second jazz career in Vienna . Together with her second husband Wolfgang Puschnig , she performed with the trio AM4 as well as with the Pat Brothers and the Red Sun formation formed from them and the percussionists of Samulnori . Her album "On Holiday" is considered a successful attempt at a contemporary approach to Billie Holiday. Sharrock and Puschnig also played in trios with Arto Tunçboyacıyan (live album at the Festival de Jazz Vitoria-Gasteiz 1995) or Michel Godard . On her CD “Confessions” (2005), which was awarded the Hans Koller Prize 2005 as “Album of the Year”, she played with the French pianist Stéphan Oliva and the bassist Claude Tchamitchian . In 2014 Sharrock and her band Sharrock Network released the album No Is No , which was followed by other records in 2016.
