Sirone (musician)

Norris "Sirone" Jones (born September 28, 1940 in Atlanta , Georgia ; † October 21, 2009 in Berlin ) was an American jazz musician (double bass, trombone, composition).

Life

Sirone first played with George Adams and worked with rhythm and blues musicians such as Sam Cooke , Smokey Robinson and Jerry Butler . He moved to New York in the 1960s and played with Pharoah Sanders in 1965 . He later worked on recordings for Noah Howard , Marion Brown , Ornette Coleman , Albert Ayler and Gato Barbieri . Together with Leroy Jenkins and Jerome Cooper , he founded the "Revolutionary Ensemble" in the early 1970s, which was one of the most important groups in avant-garde jazz of that decade and recorded 6 records. He continued to record with Sonny Sharrock , Dewey Redman , Cecil Taylor , Clifford Thornton , Kali Fasteau , George Adams and James Blood Ulmer's "Phalanx" and with Charles Gayle . In 2004 the “Revolutionary Ensemble” was revived and, with Billy Bang, the “Sirone Bang Ensemble” was founded. He also played with John Tchicai and Thomas Agergaard in the All Ear Trio (Ninth World Music 2007).

Since 1989 he lived in Berlin with his wife, actress Veronika Nowag-Jones .
