Christian Broecking
Christian Broecking (born June 5, 1957 in Flensburg ) is a German musicologist , sociologist and music critic who lives in Berlin .

Broecking studied sociology, musicology and journalism at the Free University of Berlin ; In 2011 he received his doctorate from the TU Berlin as Dr. phil. about the social relevance of Afro-American music. He is a book author, columnist for daily newspapers ( taz , Tagesspiegel , Berliner Zeitung) and specialist magazines ( Jazz thing ) and producer of radio features. He was the founding program director of Jazz Radio Berlin (1994–1998) and editor-in-chief of Klassik Radio in Frankfurt am Main (2000–2003).
Broecking was a lecturer for musicology and music journalism in Frankfurt am Main, Heidelberg and Berlin; He teaches jazz history at the Winterthur Institute for Contemporary Music. In 2007 he was a lecturer at the conference "Jazz in the Global Imagination" at Columbia University, New York. He is also a lecturer for Darmstadt's contributions to jazz research . He is a jazz juror for the German Record Critics' Prize and National Public Radio.
In 2004 Broecking founded Broecking Verlag , which he also runs. In 2012 he exhibited jazz photographs in the Zellermayer Gallery in Berlin. Broecking curated and directed the international conference "Lost in Diversity - A Transatlantic Dialogue on the Social Relevance of Jazz", which took place in 2012 at the Heidelberg Center for American Studies . In 2013 Broecking chaired the international conference "Vision, Perception, Friction: How Jazz Became Art and Attack (ed) - A Transatlantic Dialogue" at the Heidelberg Center for American Studies.
At the Darmstadt Jazzforum 2013 Broecking gave a lecture “Not Black enough? Debating Jazz in the Post-Black Time Space ". In the same year Broecking was a speaker at the scientific conference “Hobsbawm, Newton and the Jazz”, a conference of the research project “Music and Youth Cultures” and the contemporary history department of the historical seminar at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz . From 2013 to 2016 Broecking wrote a biography about the pianist and activist Irène Schweizer . In 2018 Broecking's book "Respect! The History of Fire Music" was published with a foreword by George E. Lewis.
