Darmstadt Jazz Forum
The Darmstadt Jazz Forum is the only regular scientific symposium worldwide on questions of jazz research .
The Darmstadt Jazz Forum was established in connection with the establishment of the Darmstadt Jazz Institute and has taken place every two years in Darmstadt since 1989 . In addition to scientific lectures and discussions on predetermined topics from the field of jazz, the thematic illustrative concerts will also take place.
The Jazzforum has been designed and implemented by Wolfram Knauer for the Darmstadt Jazz Institute since 1991 . The 2nd Darmstadt Jazz Forum was dedicated to the topic of “Jazz and Composition ”. In October 1993 the 3rd Darmstadt Jazz Forum took place on the subject of "Jazz in Europe", in September 1995 the 4th Darmstadt Jazz Forum on the subject of " Jazz in Germany ", in October 1997 the 5th Darmstadt Jazz Forum on the subject of "Jazz and language / language and Jazz ”instead. In October 1999, the 6th Darmstadt Jazz Forum examined “ Duke Ellington and the Consequences”, while in September 2001 the 7th Forum examined the topic “Jazz and Society (Socio-historical Aspects of Jazz)”. In 2003 the 8th Jazz Forum was about “improvising”, while in autumn 2005 the topic was “Treason !!! ... or chance? - Jazz and its split relationship to popular music ”was dealt with. In October 2007, at the 10th conference, the focus was on “The World Meets Jazz”, whereby it was less about the topic of world music than about whether musicians all over the world who have turned to jazz since the beginning of the 20th century, its afro - had to know American roots as well as their own traditions that they brought with them. The lectures of all jazz forums are documented by detailed conference reports, which are published by Wolke Verlag in Hofheim am Taunus . 15 volumes have appeared so far. Volume 1 was edited by Ekkehard Jost ; since then Wolfram Knauer has been responsible.
