Cethromycin is a glycoside and antibiotic belonging to the ketolide group . It inhibits protein synthesis in bacteria. Cethromycin is currently in phase III clinical trials (Abbott) and is intended to be used against infections of the respiratory tract, e.g. B. against Streptococcus pneumoniae .

pharmacology

Cethromycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S subunit of the ribosomes . It interferes with the 23S rRNA of this subunit by binding to domains II and V. In addition, the formation of the 30S and 50S subunits is inhibited.
