Michel Godard (born October 3, 1960 in Héricourt , Haute-Saône ) is a French jazz musician ( tuba , serpent , also e-bass ).

Live and act

Godard studied classical music (trumpet) at the Conservatory of Music in Besançon and Paris . While looking for recordings with tuba , he came across the record Bush Baby with Bob Stewart (tuba) and Arthur Blythe (saxophone). According to Godard's report, that was the entry into jazz and improvised music. From 1988 he was a member of the Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra. From 1989 to 1991 Godard played in the Orchester National de Jazz under Claude Barthélémy . He also belonged to various ensembles such as the Orchester National de France , the Ensemble Musique Vivante , the Ensemble Jacques Moderne , the Ancient Music Ensemble La Venice , XVIII-21 Musique de Lumieres and the Arban Chamber Brass Quintet .

Today Godard is a prominent European jazz musician who uses multi-part playing techniques ( multiphonics ) on the tuba , also plays contemporary and early music, and performs and records in very different ensembles and line-ups. Godard first became known through his collaboration with his compatriot Marc Steckar , who also played tuba, in the tuba jazz ensemble Steckar Tubapack . It is unusual that Godard has played the serpent , the forerunner of the tuba, in addition to the tuba since 1979 . He also uses the electric bass every now and then.

Godard formed a quartet with the American tuba virtuoso Dave Bargeron (known among other things for his collaboration with the rock big band Blood, Sweat & Tears ). Currently he plays u. a. in the group of from Lebanon originating Ud -Spielers Rabih Abou-Khalil , with the Capella de la Torre and numerous own projects such as Le miroir du temps .

Michel Godard has been teaching Serpent in the early music section of the Paris Conservatory since 2002 .
