Orchester National de Jazz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Orchester National de Jazz is a French big band in which well-known French jazz musicians (including musicians living in France) work together.

history

In 1986 the Orchester National de Jazz was founded on the initiative of the musicologist Maurice Fleuret under Jack Lang as Minister of Culture. The orchestra is financed by the French Republic. The respective artistic director puts together an ensemble and is responsible for the music programs that are played. The arrangement does not rely on a tutti of the wind instruments; rather, the individual voices are performed polyphonically in order to have a contemporary basis for the soloists' improvisations .

The artistic directors were first the saxophonist and flautist François Jeanneau for a year , then the saxophonist Antoine Hervé (1987–1989). This was followed for three years by Claude Barthélemy (1989–1991), Denis Badault (1991–1994), Laurent Cugny (1994–1997) and Didier Levallet (1997–1999). From 2000 to 2002, Paolo Damiani and François Jeanneau were joint leaders. From 2002 to 2005 Barthélemy was again in charge, followed by the vibraphonist Franck Tortiller (until 2008). Bassist Daniel Yvinec led the ensemble until the end of 2013, only to be replaced by Olivier Benoît from January 2014 to 2018 ; In 2016 the orchestra presented a cross-section of its varied history at the Jazz à la Villette festival ; all ten previous directors of the ONJ each conducted their own composition. Frédéric Maurin will lead the orchestra from 2019 to 2022.
