Sophie Agnel

Sophie Agnel (* 1964 in Paris ) is a French pianist of creative jazz and improvisation music , who is particularly known for the expanded sound possibilities she offers on the prepared piano . But she also uses synthesizers .

Live and act

Agnel deepened her classical music studies in Paris between 1985 and 1989 with a focus on jazz and improvisation with George Russell and David Liebman , before graduating in musicology in 1991 . During her studies she played with her jazz trio, but also chansons and Afro-Cuban music. Since the 1990s she has appeared on the one hand as a soloist (around 2007 at the Total Music Meeting ), but also works in duos with Bruno Chevillon , Paul Rogers , Phil Minton , Christine Wodrascka or Catherine Jauniaux and in trios with musicians such as Noël Akchoté / Christian Rollet , Hélène Breschand / Thierry Madiot , Michel Doneda / Michael Nick, eRikm / Axel Dörner . She also played in the Archipel ensemble . She performed in Ulrichsberg in 2008 with her Qwat Neum Sixx (with Daunik Lazro , violinist Michael Nick and live electronics engineer Jérôme Noetinger ) . She also works regularly with Fabrice Charles, Jean Pallandre, John Butcher , Andrea Neumann , Rhodri Davies , Claire Bergereau and Ikue Mori .

Agnel also released albums with Christian Brazier, Sunny Murray , Rasul Siddik, Lionel Marchetti & Jérôme Noetinger, Olivier Benoît ( Rip Stop ), Guillaume Orti , Christine Wodrascka, Pascale Labbé, Alex Grillo, Phil Minton as well as Martin Brandlmayr , Martin Siewert and Joe Williamson . In 2014 she brought Olivier Benoît to the Orchester National de Jazz .

She worked as a music teacher for 15 years, founded an improvisation workshop at the music school in Toulouse , where she lives, and also leads classes for collective improvisation (with children, young people and adults, but also with female prisoners) in other French cities.
