Club career

Petit began his career in 1977 at ES Arques-la-Bataille in Normandy and moved from there in 1985 to the youth department of AS Monaco. At the age of 18, Petit , who could be used as a defender and midfielder, was brought into the professional squad by Arsène Wenger . On March 18, 1989, he made his debut against FC Sochaux and played in the French Cup final that same year . In 1991 he was able to win the French Cup with Monaco and failed a year later in the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1991/92 only in the final at Werder Bremen . In his last season with Monaco, he led the team as captain to the French championship in 1996/97 . In June 1997, his former coach Arsène Wenger - who had been dismissed in Monaco in 1994 - had him signed by Arsenal . This let him now play as a defensive midfielder at the side of Patrick Vieira . Immediately in the first year they were able to win the championship in the Premier League and the FA Cup . The following two years remained untitled. In total, Petit had 118 appearances in his three years at Arsenal, he was able to score eleven goals. In the summer of 2000 he moved to FC Barcelona with Marc Overmars . Here he played on the defensive again, but could not prevail due to several injuries. From 2001 he played again - as a regular at Chelsea  - in England. In 2002 he lost the FA Cup final against his former club Arsenal. After several knee injuries, he had only a few missions in the following years and was released in summer 2004. On January 20, 2005, after six months of unsuccessful search for a new club, he announced his retirement from active professional football due to persistent knee problems and an operation that would entail an operation.

National player

For the French national team , Petit played 63 times, scored six goals and won the World Cup in 1998 and the 2000 European Championship two years later . At the 1998 World Cup he scored twice: against Denmark the decisive goal with a long-range shot and in the final against Brazil the 3-0 stoppage time. At the 2002 World Cup , he was also in the squad of the French national team , which did not survive the group stage. Petit played his last international match in February 2003. When he resigned in September 2003, he complained that although he was in top form, the Equipe Tricolore was being run by the wrong man.
