Career
societies
The center-back, who grew up in Guadeloupe , began his professional career in 1990 at AS Monaco . Before that, he was on the ball for some youth teams such as Portugais de Fontainebleau, Club Sportif de Fontainebleau and Union Sportive de Melun before joining the youth department of AS Monaco. He was appointed to the professional squad by the then coach Arsène Wenger . In six years with the Monegasque, he celebrated his first successes. In 1990/91 the team reached the final of the Coupe de France . There you could prevail with a 1-0 win over Olympique Marseille ; however, Thuram was not used in the final. As a result of this success, AS Monaco was qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup the following season . They reached the final, but had to admit defeat to Werder Bremen . But even in this game, Thuram only played the role of the spectator. In the league he was runner-up in 1991 and 1992, both times behind Olympique Marseille. Gradually, Thuram developed into the leading player in the Monegasque.
In the summer of 1996 he moved to Italy and signed a contract with AC Parma . In his very first season, the Italian championship was just missed. Two years later, the best time for Thuram in the yellow-blue dress followed. First the Coppa Italia was won and then defeated 3-0 in the final of the UEFA Cup Olympique Marseille. With Gianluigi Buffon , Fabio Cannavaro , Juan Sebastián Verón and Hernán Crespo , Thuram formed the basis for the success of the ACP. Also in the same year they won the Supercoppa Italiana .
After five years in Parma, there is a change within the Italian league, to the top club Juventus Turin . Thuram was immediately a regular and a leader there. The championship title was won straight away in 2001/02 and defended in the following year. In addition, the Supercup was won in 2002 and 2003. After the manipulation scandal in the 2005/06 season , Juventus was forced to relegate to the second division after the end of the season. Some stars could be held, others were sold or wanted to leave. Thuram was also given away for a fee of 5 million euros.
FC Barcelona became the new employer . Thuram was not seeded in Barcelona and competed with players like Rafael Márquez , Carles Puyol and Gabriel Milito . His contract, which expired in 2008, was not extended.
At the end of June 2008 he was supposed to sign a one-year contract with the French first division club Paris Saint-Germain . However, during the sports medical examination, a deformity of the heart was found, so that he had to end his active career.
National team
Lilian Thuram has played in the French national team since 1994 , first as a right defender, then as central defender and head of defense. His first tournament was the 1996 European Football Championship . His greatest success was winning the 1998 World Cup in his own country. With his only two international goals in the semifinals against Croatia, he played a major role in France's success. In 2000 he was European football champion with the French national team at the European Championships in Belgium and the Netherlands . Thuram also took part in the unsuccessful World Cup in 2002 and was also in the squad for the 2004 European Football Championship in Portugal , where he made his 100th international match. At the Soccer World Cup 2006 Lilian Thuram reached the final with his country and was elected to the All-Star-Team . He was also part of the French squad at the 2008 European Championship finals , where he took on the role of captain, but France did not get beyond the group stage. After this preliminary round he announced his retirement from the national team.
With 142 international matches, he is the record national player of the Equipe Tricolore.

Lilian Thuram was appointed to the Integration Council by the government ; In this function, he turned against the then Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy during the riots in the Paris suburbs in 2005 , who described certain young people from the suburbs as "rabble" and "good-for-nothing" and said that "the whole banlieues with a high-pressure cleaner from would have to purify this person ”. Thuram said: "If you call these people rabble, I also feel addressed, because I also come from such a banlieue."
In 2008 he founded the “Fondation Lilian Thuram - Education contre le racisme”. He was also elected to the Federal Council (conseil fédéral) of the French Football Association.
