The banner of work was donated on August 4, 1954 in one step and was an order of the GDR , which was awarded to individuals, work collectives , companies , combines and other institutions for "excellent and long-term achievements in strengthening and consolidating the GDR, especially for high Results of work in economics ”was awarded.

On August 8, 1974, the order was expanded to three levels:

  • GDR Order of Banner of Labor 1Class BAR.png Level I: 1,000 marks
  • GDR Order of Banner of Labor 2Class BAR.png Level II: 750 marks
  • GDR Order of Banner of Labor 3Class BAR.png Level III: 500 marks

The medals previously awarded were class I medals.
