Charles Dewey

Charles Dewey (born December 3, 1916 in Steglitz ; † December 27, 1973 ) was a German SED functionary as well as a finance and economic functionary in the GDR . He was President of the German Investment Bank and General Director of Genex .

Life

Dewey, the son of an American journalist , attended Reform Realgymnasium and graduated from high school in 1935 . He then completed an apprenticeship as a banker . In 1938 he was drafted into the Reich Labor Service and then into the Wehrmacht . In April 1945 Dewey tried to desert and was arrested by the Feldgendarmerie . On April 28, however, he managed to escape from the punishment company .

In 1945/46 he worked as an employee in the tax office in Berlin-Pankow . In 1945 he joined the Communist Party of Germany and in 1946 became a member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED). In 1945 he was a member of the commission set up by the Allies to resolve German banks. In March 1946 he was appointed general adviser and head of the personnel department of the general tax department of the Berlin magistrate . In 1946 he was one of the co-founders and participants in the first course of the finance school of the Berlin magistrate. In 1947 he worked as the main department head in the German Trust Administration, and in 1947/48 as senior consultant for personnel issues and administration at the German Economic Commission . In 1948 he was involved in the founding of the Deutsche Emissions- und Girobank and became a member of the board of directors of the German central bank that emerged from it .

Dewey taught at the Humboldt University in Berlin and at various SED party schools. From 1952 he was in the aspirantur and in September 1955 at the University of Rostock was awarded a Dr. rer. oec. PhD .

From April 1956 to 1963 he was President of the German Investment Bank. From 1963 to 1973 he was General Director of Giftdienst GmbH (Genex) Berlin.

From 1954 Dewey was a candidate and from 1958 to 1973 a member of the Central Revision Commission of the SED .

His urn was in the grave conditioning Pergolenweg the memorial of the socialists at the Berlin Central Cemetery Friedrichsfelde buried.
