Walter Arnold (artist)
Walter Arnold (born August 27, 1909 in Leipzig , † July 11, 1979 in Dresden ) was a German sculptor and chairman of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR .
Life
Walter Arnold was the son of a stone mason from Leipzig. He trained as a wood and stone sculptor from 1924 to 1928 . Until 1932 Arnold studied under Alfred Thiele at the Leipzig School of Applied Arts, the shaping of sculptures and ceramics . He was an assistant at Thiele until 1933, then a freelance artist until 1940. During this time he secured his income primarily through commissioned work for tomb companies or facade renovations. After that he was a soldier of the Wehrmacht and came in second world war in a prisoner of war in a camp in Bad Kreuznach .
In 1946 he took up a position as a teacher at the Leipzig College of Graphics and Book Art and joined the SED . In 1949 he accepted the call to the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts , where he worked as a professor until 1970. Then he was again a professor at the College of Graphics and Book Art and, from his retirement in 1974, he supervised a master class at the College of Fine Arts.
Arnold had been a member of the German Academy of the Arts since 1952 . From 1954 to 1958 he was a candidate for the Central Committee of the SED. From 1958 to 1961 he was a member of the Central Committee of the SED. From 1958 to 1964 he succeeded Otto Nagel as chairman of the Association of Visual Artists .
Walter Arnold died in Dresden in 1979, his grave is in the Loschwitz cemetery . The grave sculpture There is no other pain , Arnold himself created.
