history

The monument was financed with donations and work by the Stralsund population. By the summer of 1956, almost 70,000 marks were raised in donations.

Initially, it was planned to implement a design by Maximilian Schenk . This met with resistance from the administration in Berlin , whereupon this administration proposed a competition. The city commission then suggested having a design for the memorial made by Dresden artist Otto Rost , which was again rejected. Stralsund suggested that a second cast of the Weimar Thälmann memorial created by Walter Arnold in 1958 should be made, but this was rejected by the city of Weimar . When the Lord Mayor of Stralsund asked Bruno Motczinski in August 1958 about the state of affairs, he was informed that the erection of the monument had no priority and that the donations should be used for the construction of a passenger ship . The ship was built at the Volkswerft Stralsund ; the income from the passenger shipping should benefit a later monument building.

Despite this initially negative attitude, Walter Arnold was allowed to work out a draft at the request of Bruno Motczinski. This design, which is very similar to the Weimar monument, was adopted in late 1960. The Rostock District Council provided the construction costs of 80,000 marks from the number lottery .

On April 16, 1961, the foundation stone was laid on what was then Ernst-Thälmann-Ufer in the presence of Friedrich Dettmann . The outdoor facilities were completed in March 1962. On August 18, 1962, the monument was inaugurated by Ernst Thälmann's daughter Irma Gabel-Thälmann .
