19th century British suit

The term suit has different meanings. In its most comprehensive, nowadays rather uncommon meaning (for example in the military), a suit is everything that you wear / have on at the same time. Colloquial language, more like children's language, uses "clothes" in a similar way.

Meanings

In a somewhat narrower sense, a suit means a piece of clothing or a combination conceived and designed as a unit that covers the entire body (at least the upper body and legs, usually also arms, less often the head, hands and feet) (e.g. a diving suit or spacesuit ); provided that the trousers are in the shape of a trouser. Today, skirts are referred to as a costume (two-piece) or dress (one-piece). Most suits are in two parts and consist of a top and bottom. Sometimes they are also one-piece ( overall ), three-piece (three-piece jacket, vest, pants) or multi-piece.

Even further narrowed and probably the most frequently used, suit refers to the classic men's suit or street suit . It consists of a jacket and trousers and sometimes a vest made of the same upper material in the same color. It is worn with a shirt and usually with a tie , bow or stand-up collar on special occasions (going out suit) or as a business suit. Special forms for festive occasions are, for example, cutaway , tuxedo and tailcoat .

A more casual and sporty variant of a suit is the combination , for example a (sports) jacket with shirt and jeans or chinos .
